I’ve been thinking a lot about the Muslim religion lately. Not just because of the anniversary of 9/11, but also because of some recent acquaintances I’ve made. In a previous post I discussed my newfound belief in unity. I’m all-for a peaceful coexistence between tribes. I relayed in that post the ideal that, “… We can lock arms in love and face [our] enemy with the Word of God.” But can this really happen? Can we actually get to the point where we stop judging people by their outward appearances and beliefs and start accepting them for who they really are: a human being?

The Lesser of Two Evils
Luke 6:22 (NASB)
22 “Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.
This is going to be a difficult article to write. Today marks the fifth anniversary of 9/11. For a long time after that fateful day I hated the Afghans. I hated Osama bin Laden simply because he hated me. He’d never met me before, yet he wanted to kill me because of my beliefs and the country I was born in. I couldn’t understand why someone could be so full of anger at the entire American race. What did we ever do to him?

I’ve been thinking a lot about 9/11 lately. It’s been 4½ years since the attack, and we haven’t had a major terrorist attack since. I think this shows that what we are doing to prevent future attacks is working. However, I still grieve for those who died. My only concern is that people will grow numb. It seems that we’re forgetting how we felt that day.
I was at Cups at Fondren. I was picking up a couple chais for me and my mom, and a couple cappuccinos for Cliff and my dad. It was a beautiful day! The sun was shining so warmly. Fondren was bustling with activity; the noise of cars whizzing by and the chatter of shoppers filled the air. There were about a dozen people in the café that morning. When I got back to the office I saw everyone crowded around a small television watching the news. As I looked over at the screen I saw United Airlines Flight 175 crash into the south tower.
A certain shade of blue always accompanies the memory of that day. Sitting here writing this, I feel the same emotions I felt that beautiful, Tuesday morning; the confusion, the question “Why?” … all of it is so fresh, as if today were September 12, 2001. I don’t know why I felt compelled to write this today, perhaps it is just to help us cope. But whatever the reason, I’m glad I did, because now all of the problems of today seem so much smaller.
