I’ve finally got an in-house gallery running. Two bests, here: no limit on quantity of photos, and it’s über fast since I don’t have to pull images from another server. I hope you guys enjoy it; I’ll be adding more pictures when I get back overseas. Check it out.

Permalinks are being adjusted … again. Time to update your bookmarks … again. In a previous post (Redirects for Old Posts) I mentioned my switching permalink structures to create easier-to-use links, but after using the new method for a while I’ve decided to revert. Yes, the structure was easier to use, but it wasn’t as semantic as the previous system. So the links to all posts will once again have the date as part of the hyperlink like so:
/archives/2006/05/31/redirects-for-old-posts-part-2/
I think you’ll dig it.

Update
This should be the last time I change permalink structures. 2007–01–08: I don’t just change my mind all the time; I’m actually quite decisive. But I’ve found a way to link directly to the file without even messing with dates and whatnot. Using an .htaccess rewrite rule, I’ve completely eliminated all date-based URI’s. And if you do browse to a date range, you’ll politely be redirected to the archives. Now I’m happy. :o)

I’ve just completed adding redirects to my .htaccess file for all my old posts. That means that if you try to browse to a file under the old structure (/archives/2005/08/10/back-to-work-part-4/ for example) you will be “redirected” to the new location of the article (/back-to-work-part-4/). When I changed the permalink structure, I forgot about the fact that all those old posts were indexed in the search engines. Well, when people went looking for them I started seeing 404’s all over the place. It took a while to get it all straightened out, but I’m glad it’s done … and I’m glad I only had a couple dozen articles to update! Boy, that would have been difficult on a super-blog with thousands of entries. And in a few months when everyone updates their bookmarks I will probably be safe erasing the redirects. For now, though, they will make life much easier on everyone.

I finally took the plunge and started the switch to a new host. I have purchased the storage space, and I have found a new domain registrar. The site should be running from the new host within a week, depending on how quickly everything evolves.
