I found this site while searching for a WordPress plugin. I needed something to list the plugins I use here for my colophon. What I found was Viper’s Plugins Used. But I also found a great site to hang out on. Plenty of awesome movies, and a host of geekish posts about Battlefield 2. This one is now on my “regulars” list.

Unsympathetic

I found the link to this blog on the WordPress IRC channel while chatting with fellow bloggers, and was immediately sucked in. I love English majors, because their writing is not at all as boring as English class. Perhaps they use their blogs to let out all that creativity. But whatever the reason, Lisa’s blog is a great read. She possesses that characteristic “English Major” style, a writing quality that is magnetic, regardless of subject. And she is unapologetic (should I say “unsympathetic?”) about her beliefs, hanging them out for you to love or hate. I dig that kind of forward writing.

I found this Blog on the WordPress Forums yesterday. I’m a major tech geek, so any site focused on that gets my Thumbs Up. Huy does a good job of selecting interesting topics, which range from Google hacks to mouse reviews. And it’s not your typical stale manna. The site stays fresh, with no less than seven articles having been written during my review. Currently, my favorite article is the one about the Sony Ericsson W43S, a phone I shall have to find while in Asia. Kudos, Huy, on your great site, and welcome to WordPress, too!

I stumbled upon this blog quite by accident. I was immediately taken aback by the strange combination of homemaker and geek. Michelle is married with five kids (and number six is on the way). But she hacked out her own blogging platform in PHP. She homeschools her three kids who are old enough for school, yet she picked a UNIX allegory as her domain name. This girl is like my sister on Geek Steroids. But beyond the nifty references to Linux and the oh-so-cool self-hacked code, this blog also includes great writing and family pictures. It’s the kind of blog you can find yourself visiting over and over. And I believe that is exactly what I will be doing.

Writing English

For my first BlogDay 2006 post I’ve decided to showcase a Blog on WordPress.com called “Writing English.” I found a link to this site yesterday on Matt’s site, and was pleasantly surprised with what I found. Most people struggle to use the English language correctly, and I’ve found that this is true even among native speakers. The problem with English is we tend to make it up as we go along. If we have an expression to voice but no word to do it justice, we simply make one up. Or we borrow one from another language.

With this continual evolution of our language, it is easy to see how people could get mixed up. One of the greatest shortcomings among English speakers is not in speaking, but in writing. The reason for this is because we practice communicating verbally every day, but we pay little attention to the quality of our writing. We shoot off E-Mails with disregard for the consequences that could arise should the other person misinterpret our words. And, sadly, the same is true in letters, publications, and even advertisements. I’m glad to see a site dedicated to helping all of us climb over our grammatical hurdles. I will be visiting this site often.
