I was just purging spam comments Akismet captured last night and found one that made me want to cry. It was an advertisement to meet pre-teen Russian girls. I felt like I’d been punched in the stomach. I thought to myself, “Of all the blogs in the world to hit with this crap, they had to put it on mine.” Well, like I said at first, it didn’t actually make it to my site, but it’s the principle of the issue. That’s my job as a missionary; that’s why I exist, to rescue children from this vicious trap. Why would they even think to advertise that here? When I saw it in the lineup, I actually felt queasy. It was utterly sickening.

Perhaps I should enable all the footers my sundry anti-spam plugins can display. I just opened my dashboard and noticed a message from Akismet that I had received a new spam message. I actually get amused reading these, because these guys actually think their comment stands a significant chance at making it to my blog.

I was modifying my login form today when I noticed something quite strange. I’ve always been wary of dishing out my email address, having been the recipient of quite enough spam. And whenever I find some way to further obfuscate said email address, I jump on the opportunity. That’s why I installed the contact form; I didn’t want spambots harvesting my address and sending me letters about c1al3s. I’m 26; I don’t need the stuff.
As much as I like my current email address, it will probably have to be chunked, eventually. It’s so nifty, but I’m getting too much spam at that address. And that’s the curious thing; I never put my address out there for harvesters to read, I never use it in places where it might be read, I never even use it to send mail to folks I don’t trust not to send me unwanted petitions and cute pictures and such. Yet somehow it’s getting leaked.

I’m increasingly conscious of protecting private data, lately. And the other day, when someone offered to give me a paper shredder to augment my new obsession, I happily obliged. I’ve always lived in a pretty small town, and, frankly, didn’t think there was much importance in going to such extremes as shredding receipts and whatnot. After all, this is Jackson; no weirdoes live here. But it soon grew into a haunting thought pattern.

I originally started writing this post to tell you about the awesome find Matt discovered (OpenDNS), but noticed an even more important topic in my feed aggregator. Weblog Tools Collection found an awesome article about keeping your content intact. I dove headlong into the article, digging ever deeper through the links. There is so much information on this subject one hardly knows where to begin. But armed with information I’ve gained over the past week, and the information in that article, I’m prepared to do something about it.
