This is the theme I’ve created over the past week. I wanted something fast, slender, modern, and beautiful. Really, my frustrations with current web design started a month ago (2006 July 4, “Blogger Independence Day“). And my website was no exception to the rule. So I totally redesigned, not just refaced. I didn’t simply write a new stylesheet for the old theme. I started from scratch, building from the ground up using an Object-Oriented approach (which, by the way, is the approach used in the construction of WordPress; most themes, however, don’t employ this method to the greatest extent.) This programming method led to much leaner code, and consequently, a much faster page-load time. Also, there are no images in the design itself, only those found in individual posts. And there is only one div on the whole page. All-in-all, the new site is very small. The CSS file is 20% the size of the old one; that theme’s CSS file is over 550 lines long, whereas the same file for Minima Code Block weighs in at a little over 100 lines. In fact, every file is smaller, because I didn’t have to keep re-typing the same code over and over again (the benefit of object-oriented programming.) The size of the entire package, complete with all the same templates as Shades of White, is 1/3 the size. Bling bling.

There’s a 24-Hour bug hunt starting next week for the upcoming 2.0.4 and 2.1 releases of WP. If you’ve got a spare subdomain lying around, the run starts on Wednesday the 5th at 2:00 AM CDT (GMT -05:00) and goes to Thursday the 6th at 2:00 AM CDT. You don’t have to be an ultra-geek to do this, either. According to the Dev Blog, All you need to help out is the ability to install and run WordPress, folks of all skill levels are invited to join. We need people testing as much as we need people coding. (If not a little more.)
I strongly encourage you to help out; I will be. For more information about getting started, go to the WordPress Bug Hunts page. I’ve got a spare subdomain not doing anything, and I really don’t have anything better to do with my time. After all, the more secure and advanced our blogging platform, the better it is for all of us.

Tim has released two WordPress themes designed specifically for churches. The first theme is basically a blog, with the front page being used to show upcoming events, announcements, and perhaps lessons from the Pastor or an associate. The second one is aimed more towards smaller congregations who wish to create a site that is basically static. Both are completely changeable, so you’re not locked into one design. From the first page you can find links to churches that are using the theme.

Shades of White is the name of the theme I created. I will be slowly implementing this theme on my site over the course of the next few days/weeks/etc. I created this theme while maintaining a static site. I have wanted to implement the style on this new dynamic site, but haven’t had the time. Now that I’ve got this site working kind of close to the way I want it to, I have decided to spend some time decorating. This shouldn’t take very long, but it all depends on how busy I am and how much time I am able to devote to it. I look for the change to be complete within the next week, but it could be longer than that depending on circumstances.
