Feeding the Beast

I was just purging spam comments Akismet captured last night and found one that made me want to cry. It was an advertisement to meet pre-teen Russian girls. I felt like I’d been punched in the stomach. I thought to myself, “Of all the blogs in the world to hit with this crap, they had to put it on mine.” Well, like I said at first, it didn’t actually make it to my site, but it’s the principle of the issue. That’s my job as a missionary; that’s why I exist, to rescue children from this vicious trap. Why would they even think to advertise that here? When I saw it in the lineup, I actually felt queasy. It was utterly sickening.

I don’t want you to think that I’m being judgmental; I’m simply pointing to the gravity of the situation. This has always existed, but it’s been enhanced through the medium of the Internet. Lust burns like a fire, and if you keep throwing timber in, the fire will only grow. At some point you have to extinguish the flames. I’m actively seeking justice for these children (it’s not just girls who are trafficked, you know.) I’m going back to Thailand in March to work with an organization whose sole purpose is to rescue “pre-teen girls” and boys from these monsters.

Some have asked me how one person can possibly make a difference against such a monumental foe. But think about this: if we save just one girl from that life, wasn’t it worth it? Wasn’t it worth the effort to rescue just that one, precious little girl from slavery? But we’re not saving just one. Thousands — perhaps millions — have been snatched from the devil’s grasp through the miracle of love. Because people care, these children have a hope for tomorrow.

I feel like I’m about to burst just thinking about it. I can hardly wait to get back over there and see their smiling faces. The kids I met at Patti’s house love it there. They get new clothes, they get to watch football on satellite Television, they have all-new musical instruments, bicycles, toys, shoes, they have hot water … these kids are living an American lifestyle, and many of them came from grass huts. They’re not just saved from slavery; they’re given a life they couldn’t otherwise have.

But there’s still so very far to go. There are still millions of children all over the world who have been sold into slavery. They still need to be rescued. And there are millions more who haven’t yet been sold, but are still at risk. For an eye-opening—and heart-wrenching—synopsis of human trafficking, see this site: www.zoechildrenshomes.org. It is. But rest asured we are doing things about it. That link to ZOE Children’s Homes is a good one, and they are probably going to be the organization I work with when I return to Thailand.
