I finally took the plunge and started the switch to a new host. I have purchased the storage space, and I have found a new domain registrar. The site should be running from the new host within a week, depending on how quickly everything evolves.
The reason I am telling you this is because I have never switched hosts on my own before, and glitches might occur. Every other time I’ve made a hosting change, the new host did the work for me. My biggest concern is protecting all of my content, but I have been making redundant backups for a week preparing for this day. Which, like I said, was pretty redundant because I can’t even switch yet.
It turns out that my old domain registrar has the name locked for security measures (meaning, someone can’t steal it out from under me if I’m late on my payment.) And I think that’s a great idea, even though I had it set to automatically renew via PayPal. But it’s a real hindrance to changing registrars. The fortunate thing is that I don’t do this very often.
On the website of my old registrar I found that it can take up to three business days before they respond, and then they have to actually finalize everything. Then I get in touch with the new registrar to let them have the domain. By this time the new host has set up the server and I can put the files to it, and then I point the new domain registrar to the DNS servers at the new host. Goodbye old people.
A benefit you might notice (particularly if you are on dial-up) is quicker response. The new host has RAID arrays versus standard hard drives like you’d see in a desktop, and their DNS servers are hosted by the same people I’m hosting my domain name with. Yet, the domain registrar wanted to charge me another $15/year to use them as my DNS server. That would be pretty retarded on my part, since there’s no difference.
Hopefully everything will go off without a hitch. The way this is supposed to work is that you will notice nothing. However, that is not always the case. While everything is switching over I will probably have my temporary page up, basically just saying that I am in the middle of updating. Yeah, I know, again with the redundancy. But it’s the polite thing to do.
If the site becomes unavailable and you need to get in touch with me during this time, you can email this domain name at gmail.com. That address is completely independent of this site, and will not be affected by the switch.
Thank you for your patience while I create a better JonLandrum.com for everyone!
