A picture of a freakishly-huge bug, kindly lent to me by a good friend
7 February 2010, 09:00I did a lot of exploring while in Mae Salong, and one day I decided to go into town (Mae Salong Villa is on the outskirts of the village, just as you’re getting into town; the town proper, as it were, is a good kilometer further down the road). I found a number of hotels there, and a gaggle of three hostels, all next-door to each other, and all offering private rooms for 50 Baht per night (about a dollar fifty during the time I was there).
One of these hostels has a restaurant on the first floor, and the food there is actually pretty good. I ate dinner there that night, and met a gal from Holland named Kit. We got to talking—across the room from each other—and decided it would be best if we joined each other, if for no other reason, for the sakes of the other guests! She had a friend with her whom she had just met (she’s quite friendly) who is from France, and spoke little English. But the three of us still had a good time. And, as it turns out, Christian was staying here, too, and he and Kit had planned to meet each other; she was there waiting on him.
While showing me around the hostel they were staying in, I spotted this huge, termite-looking bug on the wall next to her room. I took a few shots of it, but as it was night, none of them turned out right. Kit, kind as she is, took my card, put it in her camera, and slid a picture of the bug she had taken earlier that day onto my card. He hadn’t moved from that spot all day. I wonder if he was dead?
As I had been planning all along to make a photoblog of my journey to Thailand, I asked her permission to display her photo on my site. She gladly said yes, and here it is. So, Kit, if you’re reading this, thank you. Now, obviously, this photo isn’t copyrighted by me; it’s Kit’s photo, and she holds the copyright to it. So don’t be stealing Kit’s photos either, m’kay? :~]
